Obituary: John (Jack) McCarthy

On April 29, 2019, in Latest News, by The Somerville Times

John (Jack) McCarthy died suddenly on April 24th 2019 at age 55.  He was predeceased by his parents Thomas and Mary Jane (Kiley).  Jack attended Saint Clement High School in Medford where he played football and referred to himself as “Engine 88.”  He enlisted in the US Army and attended the Defense Language Institute in California where he studied Russian.

Jack worked as a technician for Verizon Communications for nearly two decades.  He was a passionate sports fan, an avid reader, a brilliant wit, and a fierce Jeopardy contender.  Those that knew Jack would describe him as a kind and gentle soul and a dedicated and loyal friend. His most important role, however, was that of a devoted and caring father to his son, Jake, and daughter, Janie, who were an unending source of pride for him.  He enthusiastically cheered them on in all of their endeavors, and they adored him.  We all take comfort knowing that Jack is now happily reuniting with family and friends engaged in spirited conversation, telling tales, and laughing heartily.

In addition to his children, Jack leaves his siblings: Thomas McCarthy (Lynne), Ted McCarthy (Valerie), Mary Jane Rossi (Joe), Karen Hogan (Mike), Paul McCarthy (Andrea), Janice Delory (Leo), and Robert McCarthy.  He was also a beloved uncle to his many nieces and nephews: Alex, Annie, Sarah, Tommy, Bobby, Ian, McCartney, Michael, Erin, and Scott.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours at George L. Doherty Funeral Home, 855 Broadway in Somerville, on Monday, May 6th from 4:00PM – 8:00PM. Funeral services and interment will be private.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Jake & Janie McCarthy Educational Fund c/o Thomas J. McCarthy, Esq., 741 Broadway, Somerville, MA 02144.
