Our View of the Times – April 10

On April 10, 2019, in Latest News, by The Somerville Times

It’s as if, for some of us anyway, that we’ve grown numb to the endless cavalcade of outrages thrown our way as we patiently await the completion of the grand Green Line Extension.

After years of debate, false starts, and massive cost overruns, the dim light at the end of this seemingly endless tunnel grows brighter and we can almost see our way to its end.

But there are still a few wrinkles to be ironed out, and yet another outrage to be confronted.

It has recently come to the attention of the general public that a serious shortfall in funding for accessibility at the in progress Union Square Green Line Station. It seems that cut-backs in station design funding have gone as far as leaving out a vital elevator at the station that would serve the elderly disabled, and otherwise physically limited riders of the line.

The city has stepped up and is applying its daunting powers of persuasion to the powers that be, i.e. Secretary of Transportation Stephanie Pollack, Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley, Mayor Joseph Curtatone, MBTA GLX Project Program Manager John Dalton, Governor Charles D. Baker, and the Somerville delegation in the State Legislature.

Let us hope that the effort is successful. Making the most needful among us the victims of this apparent case of poor planning and dubious setting of priorities is unfair in the extreme.
