The Somerville School Committee is hosting a second public hearing on the proposed Powderhouse Studios Innovation School on Wednesday, February 6, at 6:00 p.m. at the West Somerville Neighborhood School. There will be a presentation about the plan and then public comment. Visit www.somerville.k12.ma.us/powderhouse-proposal for more information. The School Committee also invites you to share your thoughts about adding this potential new school and the district budget for the upcoming school year during public comment at the start of every full School Committee meeting, by contacting School Committee members directly, and during office hours being held throughout the city through February 10. Below is a list of remaining winter office hours: Friday, February 8, 10:00-11:30 a.m. – School Committee Vice Chair Emily Ackman with City Councilor Matthew McLaughlin and State Representative Mike Connolly at the Cross St. Senior Center, 165 Broadway; and Sunday, February 10, 10:30 a.m.-noon – School Committee Member Laura Pitone with City Councilor Mark Niedergang at Armory Café, 191 Highland Ave.

The Health and Human Services Department, Community Clothing Closet of the Somerville Public Schools, and 311 are collecting donations of new or gently used winter clothing for residents and students who need them. Items most urgently needed include winter coats, pants, hats, gloves, socks, and boots for children (sizes 4T and up), as well as winter items for teens and adults. You can drop off donations through February at one of three locations during their normal business hours: The welcome desk at Somerville City Hall, 93 Highland Ave.; The Health and Human Services Department, 165 Broadway; and The East Somerville Community School, 50 Cross St. If you have a child in the Somerville Public Schools and need help with getting winter clothes for your family, please contact Francia Reyes at freyes@k12,somerville.ma.us or (617) 625-6600, ext. 6994.

Somerville’s Health and Human Services Department is looking for volunteers for the Medical Reserve Corps (MRC). MRC volunteers might be called on to work with city staff to keep residents safe before, during, and after emergencies and natural disasters. No medical experience is required to sign up and volunteers will get ongoing training in skills like first aid, CPR, mental health first aid, Narcan administration, and disaster preparation. If you’re interested in signing up, there will be a registration meeting on Thursday, February 7, at 6:00 p.m., at the Cross Street Senior Center, 165 Broadway. Sharing Our Stories Support Group takes place on Thursday, February 14, 7:00-8:30 p.m. Join SFLC staff and fellow Somerville parents for a support group for families with young children who have special needs. Raising a child who does not always fit in can be challenging. This free, open-ended group will offer adults the opportunity to share joys, concerns, frustrations, questions and resources about their experiences. Facilitated by Amy Bamforth, LICSW. Support Group meets at the Cummings School, 42 Prescott St.

The 17th Annual Brian Higgins Foundation Trivia Night takes place on Thursday, March 21, from 6:30 – 11:00 p.m. at the Tufts University’s Cousens Gym. Join the fun and support a great cause. The Brian Higgins Foundation’s goal is to help children with special needs and their families have a fun quality of life. Along with a fun and friendly trivia competition, the evening includes a silent auction, a 50/50 drawing, numerous raffles to win, a light dinner and a cash bar. Donations are tax deductible. Enter a team for $250, or purchase an individual ticket through PayPal and join an existing team. Registration deadline is March 1. East Somerville Main Streets is making trivia night hyper local with a special edition of East Somerville Trivia at Casey’s on April 23. Casey’s bar on Broadway regularly hosts a popular weekly Trivia Night on Wednesday’s nights. This will be a special one night only event to celebrate Somerville’s (particularly East Somerville) unique local history. Trivia will start at 8:00 p.m. and all are welcome to participate. While there is no cost to participate, there will be a suggested donation request of $5 that will go towards East Somerville Main Streets.

Are you a Somerville High School Class of 1969 graduate? If so, join in the SHS 2019 Class Day festivities. Somerville High School is looking for 50 graduates from the SHS Class of 1969 to participate in Class Day activities.
