Kiwanis Club of Somerville awards scholarships

The Kiwanis club of Somerville today awarded scholarships to six Somerville High School seniors. Distinguished Past President David O’Brien, Chair of the Scholarship Committee, explained that the college scholarships are funded by the sale of Lucky K tickets which are sold by the members throughout the year.

The Scholarship Committee, consisting of members Charlie Ball, Ellen O’Brien, Isaac Machado and Mike McWilliams reviewed over 100 scholarship requests. Somerville Kiwanis presented $1,000 scholarships to six, amazingly wonderful students.

The first three scholarships were: The Gerry Donahoe Memorial Scholarship; The Paul O. Kelly Memorial Scholarship; and The Larry Post Memorial Scholarship. The six Somerville High School students included Thomas Barton, Maria Arambor, Zoya Philopovic, Wendy Majano-Genevora, Yew Ying Chen and Serena Arensbach.

Students will be going to the following colleges and for the following studies: University of Massachusetts, Lowell/Mechanical Engineering; Brandeis University/Education & Politics, Pre-Law; University of Massachusetts, Amherst/Public Health; University of Massachusetts, Boston/Business Management; University of Massachusetts, Boston/ Nursing; and University of Massachusetts, Lowell/Environmental Engineering

All of the recipients are inductees of the Anthony B. Fedele National Honor Society at Somerville High School. Tony Fedele was a Past President of Somerville Kiwanis.

Past President Charlie Ball expressed the club’s great pride and excitement for these students whose accomplishments as stated by DPP/DS David were truly amazing. PP Charlie said these young adults have the potential to do great things and he encourages them to make their dreams and goals a reality. Somerville Kiwanis is proud of them.
