The Somerville High Football Team suffered a tough 35-7 defeat at the hands of Malden Catholic. Now they’ll have the daunting task of facing top ranked Xaverian in Friday night’s non-league match-up at Dilboy Field.

It didn’t take long for the Malden Catholic football team to establish their presence at Dilboy Field.

Vinny Fazzolari and Anthony Scurto each rushed for two touchdowns as the Lancers rolled to a 35-7 win over Somerville in Friday night’s non-league match-up. With the loss, the Highlanders fell to 1-2 overall.

“(Malden Catholic) is a very good team, and they got off to a great start,” said coach Harry Marchetti. “Once they got going, we did everything we could to respond, but (Malden Catholic) was able to take advantage of their opportunities. They have a couple of good running backs that kept pounding the holes.”

In the first quarter, the Lancers grabbed a 7-0 lead as Scurto scampered for a 40-yard touchdown run, gliding into the end zone along with the successful extra point by Alex Ciaramella.

Minutes later, the Lancers found the end zone once again en route to a 15-0 lead. After a quick drive down field, the Lancers capped the scoring as Fazzolari emerged on a two-yard plunge into the end zone. Electing for a two-point conversion, Raeshawn Kennedy fired a strike to Tom Meade in the end zone.

It stayed that way until midway through the second quarter as the Highlanders trimmed the lead to 15-7. Off a screen play, quarterback Rob Pratt fired a strike to Zack Sciuto, who scampered downfield and into the end zone.

Any hopes of a Highlander comeback would be quickly thwarted as Scurto dashed for his second touchdown of the contest for a 20-7 lead midway through the third quarter. From the Highlander 30-yard line, Scurto dodged through several tacklers at the line of scrimmage and broke free into the end zone.

In the fourth quarter, the Lancers secured the victory with a pair of touchdowns. After Matt Heriveaux finished off a 40-yard touchdown run, the Lancers capped the scoring with Fazzolari’s second touchdown of the contest, delivering a four yard plunge into the end zone in the game’s final minutes.

The Highlanders will endure another daunting task when No.1 ranked Xaverian arrives at Dilboy Field on Friday night.

“It’s only going to get tougher,” said Marchetti. “We have to come out, have a great week of practice, and put together a great game.”
