powderhouse_viewWhat’s in an old building anyway? Memories, and plenty of them. That’s for sure. Such is the case with the much-beloved Somerville High School auditorium, which just this week celebrated its official reopening with a short ceremony that brought city officials and the public together to welcome the old landmark back into service in grand style.

How many precious memories of past students, teachers, parents and regular citizens haunt the confines of those four walls and balcony? The shows and concerts, the meetings and special presentation, too many to mention.

This is a place with heritage. Deep and meaningful to so many. The restoration job done on this facility is staggering in its scope. The damage done by Hurricane Sandy back in 2012 was heartbreakingly extensive, putting both the school auditorium and cafeteria out of commission for all this time.

While students and their programs were severely disrupted, the city made sure that a return to the facility’s former functionality would be restored, with many improvements made in the process.

This landmark while stand for a long time to come, thanks to the hard work of all those involved with its return to form.

So, what’s in a newly revived old building anyway? A future full of memories yet to be made by untold multitudes of students and others yet to pass through.

That’s for sure.
