Newstalk – September 17

On September 17, 2014, in Latest News, by The Somerville Times

The calls to Massport from all of us here in the Ville, have helped to slow down the air traffic over the city from constant to every now and then at least for now. As told to us from someone on a flight out of Logan recently the captain came over the loudspeaker and announced that the flight was taking off from over the ocean for “noise abatement”. So the calls are working but we must keep a vigil and when you hear them make sure you call 617-561-3333 or go online and let them know your hearing them again. http://www.massport.com/environment/environmental-reporting/noise-abatement/noise-complaints/.

Wow! 102 years young to Ms. Ida Azzolino. Happy Birthday to a wonderful lady and guess what – she still loves her bingo with her lady friends at COA once or twice a week. A lifelong resident and a lady with a strong constitution. We wish her all the best. Ida has to tell us her secret. Maybe it’s the Somerville water?

Happy Birthday this week to a few of our good friends here in the Ville. First of all, our good friend David Lebahn is celebrating this week. We wish him the very best. He’s recently been taping some big time Hollywood movies which will be out soon, as well as doing some theatre work in NYC. Also, happy birthday to one of the nicest and sincerest ladies here in the city, Alderman-At-Large Mary Jo Rossetti is celebrating. We hope she has a great day for herself with her family. To that crazy guy who used to work at DPW, Phil Jeffres, who is also celebrating this week, we salute him and hope he and his lovely lady Jody have a great day. We know they will. To a lady who is from a wonderful family here in Somerville, the ever so nice Donna Piro-Andon, who looks younger all the time, and again she has the Piro smile and friendly disposition. We hope she has a wonderful day for herself with her family. Her father was the ever popular Alderman-At-Large Peter G. Piro and her mother was the great Penny Piro. What a fantastic family. Also celebrating this week is the owner and manager of PJ Ryans in Teele Square, Conor Brennan. What a nice guy. We hope you wish him a happy birthday when you drop in to his popular place here in Somerville.

Happy Birthday to former Alderman and nice guy Tom Taylor. He’s celebrating this week by having “Tom Taylor Birthday Walk for Dana Farber” this Sunday. Please help to support them in this birthday walk. You can help and join in by writing a check payable to “Jimmy Fund Walk” and send it directly to Rachel, Tom or Celia at: 32 Vinal Ave., Somerville. Please know they appreciate warm thoughts and spreading the word as well as any donations that can honor anyone and still support their walk. Each walker must commit to $300 plus a $25 entry fee. Donations to the team site can apply to those who cannot meet $300. Pass on the information and hold Tom in your thoughts and prayers.

Somerville High Adult Evening Courses are starting up again this fall, and registration is over the next two weeks Tuesday and Thursday nights at the High School main office. One class in particular being offered again this semester is the Real Estate course being offered for $165, which is more than half of what it would cost going anywhere else. Plus it is a live course with interaction with the teacher who has over 35 years of experience to offer. Register directly to the Principal, Sophia Carafotes, by emailing her at scarafotes@k12.somerville.ma.us or visit the high school at 6 p.m. and see how many great courses that they have to offer the public at real low prices you can’t find anywhere. Let Sophia know you saw it here. She’s one of Somerville’s finest teachers.

We will be bestowing the “Best of Somerville” awards again this year. Started 30 years ago by one of our past owners, Bob Publicover, it continues to this day. This year we will have a different twist on it by adding popular food items to the categories. Best Hamburger, Mac & Cheese, Pastry, Donuts, etc. And if you have a suggestion, again, send it along to 617 666-4010. Leave a message for the category you’d like to see nominated. We will be rolling out the ballots shortly for the “Best of Somerville 2014”. A couple of our readers called this past week giving us suggestions and we thank them very much. We will ad them to our list.

The primary elections are over and we are pretty happy with two of our choices who won. Marian Ryan won big time for Middlesex District Attorney. Now, we know she’s originally a Somerville lady. So we think her father, who is seen in Davis Square a lot, worked pretty hard for his daughter. Marian is a great lady and will make a fantastic District Attorney. Just think, the first woman District Attorney from Somerville. Makes you proud. Her campaign coordinator here in Somerville was Ward 3 Alderman Bob McWatters, who did a fantastic job as usual. It’s very difficult to lose an election when you have Bob on your side working hard for you, as he did for his and our friend Marian. She has no Republican opponent in November, so effectively she is the DA. Great job and not bad for a first time political run.

The other candidate who we are pleased won was Maura Healey for Attorney General. She worked hard and was up against a lot of the big guys, but her grass roots campaign helped to make sure Maura won handily in the primary. She does have an opponent in November but we feel once again she will win big.

One of our Newstalkers stopped in recently at Petsi Pies at 285 Beacon Street and purchased some out of this world cupcakes and an apple pie to die for, and met and talked to the owner. What a nice lady. If you’re down on Beacon Street (next to Star Market) stop in and get one of the peanut butter cupcakes that we strongly recommend, among other items for sale.

What happened to manners with some of the younger generation who have moved in and adopted our city. It seems that some of them need to get some manners. When you cut in front of someone or walk across someone close you should say “excuse me”. All too often at the last two Farmers Market in Union Square there has been too much pushing and shoving to cut in line. What are some of your comments out there about manners. Is it a thing of the past? What have you seen that makes this argument?
