Police responded to a report of a shoplifter at the Market Basket store on Somerville Ave. last week.

Upon arrival, the officers found the suspect sitting on the ground, detained by store loss prevention personnel. According to their statement to police, the individual, identified as Craig Thomson, 51, had been detained after being caught allegedly taking several hundred dollars worth of shrimp out of the store without paying for them.

A witness inside the store reportedly observed Thomson placing packages of shrimp inside a bag and alerted the store staff. The employee reported that he recognized Thomson as someone who had been suspected of prior incidents of shoplifting.

Thomson was intercepted and detained by the store employees after he was spotted attempting to exit the store without paying for the merchandise.

According to reports, Thomson dropped the bag, which contained several packages of shrimp. Additionally, Thomson reportedly opened his jacket and several more packages fell to the ground.

Thomson reportedly attempted to flee from the store loss prevention employees, but was intercepted and detained until police arrived.

Thomson was placed under arrest and charged with larceny over $250.
