St. Clement sports update

The Saint Clement Lady Anchors came from behind to topple league rival Pope John High School of Everett 11-10 to even their Catholic Central League (CCL) record to 3-3 Monday, May 6 at Pope John.

The game was a pitching duel into the 5th inning with Pope John leading 3-2. In the bottom of the 5th Pope John broke it open scoring 4 runs to make it 7-2.

In the top of the 6th, captain Jessica Popken (Medford) started the Saint Clement rally with a lead off walk and a delayed steals to 2nd base and then 3rd. Freshman Katelyn Anderson (Medford) drove in Popken. Nalani Reyes (Everett) drew a walk bringing up senior captain Allison Caloggero (Medford) who hit a ground rule double to center field knocking in 2 RBIs.

Caloggero went back out for on the mound the bottom of the 6th and let up one run to make the score 8-5 after six innings. Top of the 7th the Lady Anchors the bottom of their order up. Pope John quickly got two outs and then Katelyn Anderson gets a bloop hit to right field and Emily Rizzuto reaches on an error bring up the top of the order Maya Leete (Danvers). Leete dropped a bloop hit over 3rd base loading the bases. Jessie Jepson (Medford) then hit a single to center scoring a run and Reyes follows with a double to center field scoring two more runs. Caloggero then hit a triple scoring two more runs. Christina Puccio then chipped in with a hit to left field scoring Caloggero for the Lady Anchors 6th run of the inning.

Caloggero went back on the mound for the bottom of 7th. Jessica Popken robbed Pope John of a hit by snagging the ball down the line with a diving pickup. With two outs and down by 2, their 9th batter walks bringing up the top of their order. Pope John’s first and second batters get singles driving in a run apiece making the score 11-10 anchors. Caloggero stayed composed and struck out the next batter to end the inning securing the win for the Lady Anchors.
