Fundraiser for wounded Somerville detective Friday

Somerville police are asking the public to join them in helping to support a decorated detective shot and almost killed in the line of duty Nov. 3.

A fundraiser for Detective Mario Oliveira will be held Jan. 28 at the Somerville City Club, 20 Inner Belt Rd., to help support his recovery. Oliveira has been honored as the department’s officer of the year and has received many commendations.

Tickets are $20 and entertainment includes a DJ, raffles, buffet and cash bar.

    This is a great thing to do. But isn’t it shameful that a wounded police officer does not get all the care he needs via the health care and support mechanisms (financial and not) provided by his employer?? Can somebody enlighten the rest of us about this?

    Fundraiser??? doesnt he get paid his full salary while out work? I thought the city had good benefits
