The Somerville Boys Cross Country team handily defeated Lynn English, 16-47, having standout junior Highlander Sam Buckley winning his second race in as many weeks, clocking in at 14:40 for the 2.5-mile course.

The resurgent Somerville Boys team captured the first four slots, with highly heralded sophomores Atticus Kaye and Atticus Borggaard placing second and third, respectively, and stalwart senior Calvin Wicks in fourth.

Top runner in fifth place for the Lynn English Bulldogs was Eamonn McHale with a time of 16:16. The revamped Lady Highlanders also won the meet, with freshman Charlotte Johnson in first with a time of 19:54, closely followed by sophomore Anna Siebler.

“I’m so impressed by the effort and resiliency of these kids,” said Somerville Head Coach Sean Fitzgerald, who also noted the team’s commitment and focus.

“Practice is everything, it’s a direct correlation to performance in competition, and these kids show up ready to go every day,” praised Fitzgerald.

Both of the Somerville teams stand unblemished in league competition at 2-0. Both teams recently excelled at the recent Amherst Invitational, and have an aggressive and highly competitive schedule coming up. Most all Massachusetts MIAA teams are on a fully renewed full schedule after the postponement of last year’s season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
