Upcoming Nightwork

With warmer weather now upon us, they want to remind abutters that night work is likely to continue in various locations.

Current night work plans include:

  • At Gilman Square, a 4:00 AM start for construction has been planned for Saturday morning, May 8, 2021. The purpose of this one-day operation is to remove the temporary pedestrian overpass at School Street. This will allow crews to complete construction on the School Street Bridge which is expected to be reopened for vehicular, pedestrian, and bike traffic next month. This move will also allow crews to construct the elevator and stair tower connecting the School Street Bridge sidewalk to the new Gilman Square Station platform. Further night work in this area will continue at times.
  • Night Work has been scheduled along the MBTA right-of-way between Walnut Street and McGrath Highway bridges beginning as early as Monday night, May 10, and is expected to continue into June. The purpose of this work is to prepare the track bed for the laying of crushed stone (called ballast) to support GLX track installation in this area expected in the coming weeks.

In order to complete the work quickly and efficiently, the yellow construction train known as the Multi-Purpose Machine (MPM) will be used at night within work zones along the entire Medford Branch. The vehicle is required by federal regulation to sound its horn during frequent stops and starts.

College Ave Bridge Detour (Saturday, May 8)

Vehicular and pedestrian traffic on the College Ave Bridge at Boston Ave in Medford will be restricted at times on Saturday, May 8. Temporary detours are expected at times during the morning and early afternoon hours on Saturday to accommodate a large crane lift from the College Ave Bridge. The purpose of the lift is to hoist a permanent, prefabricated pedestrian bridge into place which will run parallel and just north of the College Avenue Bridge over the MBTA right-of-way. This newly designed pedestrian bridge will function as the main connection between College Ave, the entrance to the future Medford/Tufts Station, and Boston Ave.  Uniformed police officers will be on hand at all times on Saturday to direct traffic.

They  apologize for any disruption caused by this work.

As they continue to advance, the project will make every effort to keep abutting neighborhoods apprised of upcoming nightwork through regular email contact. They  also encourage followers to check for regular construction updates at www.mass.gov/glx.
