A drunken homeless man told a robbery victim who tried calling for help, “Calling the police won’t stop a knife in your chest,” during a robbery attempt on McGrath Highway Friday, according to police.

Michael Cisternelli, 27, was arrested and charged with attempt to commit a crime and attempted armed robbery after a Somerville police officer witnessed the altercation, police said. Police said he had slurred speech, was unsteady on his feet and smelled of alcohol.

Cisternelli allegedly approached the 23-year-old victim at the corner of McGrath and Washington Street with a closed fist. He said, “I remember you from this morning at Dunkin’ Donuts,” according to police. The victim said he was at Dunkin’ Donuts that morning but didn’t recognize Cisternelli.

Cisternelli said he had a knife and reached into his pockets before he said, “Now I’m going to take your money,” according to police.

The victim ran from Cisternelli toward Alston Street where he saw a police cruiser.
