 The City of Somerville is currently seeking applicants for one open position on the Somerville Conservation Commission. The Conservation Commission is devoted to preserving and protecting Somerville’s natural environment with an emphasis on wetlands, open space, and community gardens. Members are charged with administering and enforcing the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Wetlands Protection Act and Rivers Protection Act to protect the city’s wetlands and rivers. In addition, the Commission plays an important role as a sounding board for open space planning and initiatives. The City’s community gardens program, which offers gardening plots to residents, is also overseen by the Commission.

The Commission meets monthly, typically on the fourth Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m., and conducts occasional site visits during weekdays. Its seven volunteer members are appointed by the Mayor and approved by the City Council for three-year terms.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience in Wetlands Protection Act and regulation implementation, environmental permitting, stormwater engineering, wetlands biology, hydrology, geology, open space or community garden management, or resource management.

Enthusiastic applicants with other relevant experience are also encouraged to apply.

Applications will be reviewed by the Appointments Advisory Committee, and applicants will be notified if they are selected as finalists. Questions may be submitted to Mr. Drayton at mdrayton@somervillema.gov.

    We have a conservation commission in Somerville? We have wetlands? We have nature? How did I not know this?

    YAP- wetlands aren’t the biggest issue the commission needs to deal with in Somerville, though we do have the Mystic River to the north. Don’t be confused by the name of the MA law which the commission is there to enforce. Note, for example, that “stormwater engineering” appears before wetlands in the posting.
