Our View of the Times – August 5

On August 5, 2020, in Latest News, by The Somerville Times

Even though the summer weather is enticing and it draws us out into the open for social and athletic activities, it is important to remember that the risk of catching the COVID-19 virus is still very real.

More than ever, it is important to follow the established safety guidelines as we continue our efforts to flatten the curve, lower infection rates and ultimately defeat the scourge that has rendered our lives heavily restricted and our patience taxed to the very limits.

The euphoria felt with the season is natural and completely understandable, especially considering all the staying at home we underwent through the earlier part of the year. We have felt pent up and eager for action, freedom of movement and social interaction. The season inspires us to live life to the fullest and be as active as we can be.

It feels like something of a wet blanket to have to restrict our activities and hold down those impulses. But deep down we know that we have to do whatever it takes to protect ourselves and others while the pandemic is still in full force.

In fact, infection rate resurgences have made it clear that we need to remain as vigilant and cautious as we can be. Without a doubt, this is not the time to be letting our guard down.

The current situation cannot go on forever, and we can surely hold the line when it comes to practicing social distancing and wearing face masks whenever it is appropriate to do so. By following these guidelines, we’ll all be doing our part to help bring this nightmare to a close. In the meantime, enjoy your summer.
