When the Christ Child is a Girl

for Ellen

Janus puts on his forward face

Turns up the candlewick for her

Holds the double-sacred

That seasons may begin

Sets merchant sails to sea

Unlocks the gates of favor

Doors of plenty

Lets fecundity take its course

Wards off the owl

All war in her

Lays down his staff, his key

Bring dates and honey

A bowl of figs

For her, today, gold coins

— Joanne DeSimone Reynolds
