Union Square Station Associates (US2), the City’s master developer partner for Union Square’s revitalization, will present its proposed program for Union Square’s redevelopment at the next Somerville By Design meeting on Wednesday, February 25.

This will be the fourth workshop in the Somerville By Design process which follows a series of community “visioning sessions” where residents have weighed in with their ideas for the future of Union Square.

“Through the City’s Somerville By Design process, US2 has had the opportunity to hear from hundreds of Somerville’s residents and business owners about their priorities for Union Square, and now we are sharing our initial ideas about how to fulfill their vision for making Union Square an even better place to live, work and play,” said Greg Karczewski, president of US2.

US2’s presentation will focus on a proposed mix of uses for the D2 and D3 parcels that seeks to meet community objectives as outlined in Somerville’s comprehensive plan, “SomerVision,” including job creation, office and commercial space, housing, retail, open space and broadening the tax base. The plan is driven by US2’s strategy for making Union Square an employment center and magnet for innovation jobs.

“As our design plans for Union Square begin to take shape, we look forward to continuing a meaningful dialogue with Somerville’s residents, business owners, elected officials and other stakeholders to ensure this project achieves the ambitious goals expressed during the public engagement process and in SomerVision,” said Karczewski.

Wednesday’s Somerville By Design workshop will be held at the old Post Office at 237 Washington Street at 6:30pm and is open to the public.

ABOUT US2:

Union Square Station Associates (US2) has been selected by the Somerville Redevelopment Authority (SRA) as the master developer partner for the Union Square revitalization plan.

The development team is working in partnership with the City of Somerville, SRA, Civic Advisory Committee, current property owners and the Union Square community to design and implement the redevelopment of seven development blocks identified in the state-approved Union Square Revitalization Plan.

US2 will work to achieve the goals outlined by the community in SomerVision – creating new jobs, public green spaces and homes within a range of affordability in Union Square while preserving the historical character and “funkiness” that everybody loves today.
