A uniformed police officer on foot patrol in the Assembly Row shopping area reportedly spotted a man through the shop window at J. Crew placing something under his coat last Friday afternoon.

The officer entered the store and located the suspect, later identified as Jonathan Devereaux, 26, of Medford, who had reportedly hidden in an alcove and was attempting to put on the shirt that he had previously tucked under his coat.

The officer reportedly approached Devereaux and told him to stop what he was doing, at which time the suspect ran out the door, pushing past security.

The officer gave chase and called for backup. A short time later, Devereaux was apprehended and placed into custody.

The shirt that Devereaux had allegedly attempted to steal was valued at $29.99.

Devereaux was subsequently charged with shoplifting by asportation and resisting arrest.
