A few blocks away from Davis Square Station on Holland St., one finds the back of Powder House Community School. One can hardly tell it’s an abandoned school until they see the schoolyard, which is now still being used as a practice field for a local bicycle riding school.

On July 21, the City of Somerville called upon its residents, mainly those who live in Ward 7 of Somerville, to come up with plans to redevelop this abandoned facility after the city ended negotiations with Tufts University on its redevelopment March this year, due to not committing to a timetable.

In the second of a series of public meetings last week seeking community input on the building and how the open space near the site and the Tufts Administration Building (TAB) behind the current school on Holland will be designed and what recreational features will be included, a representative from Tufts said the university wanted to maintain flexibility with how it will use the new building.

While there are still plenty of details to be worked out and many more meetings to be held, a clear consensus is emerging on what Tufts should do as it solidifies its plans for the Powder House School on Broadway directly behind the Tufts Administration Building (TAB) on Holland Street. And what that looks like now is one office building, not two, and no residential developments on the site.

powder_house_school_webResidents living near the Powder House Community School will have a say on Tufts University’s plan to redevelop the site.

Four public meetings, the first of which takes place at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 13, at the TAB building (169 Holland St.) are scheduled to discuss the proposal.

Mayor Joseph Curtatone accepted the Powder House Community School Technical Advisory Committee’s final recommendations for redevelopment of the former K-8 public school site back in September. The committee recommended three of six proposals for consideration, with the proposal by Tufts University receiving the top recommendation.
