An 18-month old child was in the backseat of a car stopped in connection with a heroin bust Nov. 3 in Somerville, police said.

Police said the child was in the car with two drug suspects stopped on Dana Street and caught with cocaine and heroin. The child was placed into temporary custody of family relatives and a report was filed with the state Department of Child and Family Services, police said.

Detectives were conducting narcotic surveillance in East Somerville when they saw James McSorley and Jon Paul Awbrey meet at Florence Street Park, police said.

Police said the two men showed signs of preparing for a drug deal as they walked down the street making phone calls and looking around. “McSorley’s placing of cellular telephone calls and anxious behavior was consistent with activity displayed by desperate drug addicts attempting to satisfy [their] addiction,” wrote Detective James Hyde in his report.

Investigators followed the men to Myrtle Street where they allegedly met a third man, Tommy Azaredo. The group allegedly met with Tara Churn and Frederick Cook, 31, of 39 Elm Avenue, Brockton, for a street level drug deal.

When investigators approached McSorley, Awbrey and Azaredo, McSorley allegedly tried to discard a bag of heroin.

McSorley, 25, of 50 Pearl St., was arrested and charged with possession of a class A drug and conspiracy to violate a drug law. Awbrey, 24, of 45 Mystic St., Charlestown, was arrested and charged with being present where heroin is kept and conspiracy to violate a drug law. Azeredo, 30, of 69 Myrtle St., was arrested and charged with being present where heroin is kept and conspiracy to violate a drug law.

Police followed Churn and Cook to Dana Street where they stopped their car. In a search of the car, police allegedly found cocaine and heroin. The 18-month old child was also located in the car.

Churn, 29, of 76 Lowther Rd., Framingham, was arrested and charged with being present where heroin is kept.

Cook was arrested and charged with drug violation near a school or park, possession of a class B drug subsequent offense, conspiracy to violate a drug law, possession of a class B drug with intent to distribute and warrant charges.

  1. Odd, I have known Freddie Cook for 25 years and he is a caring compassionate human being who was and is always great with my children. He watched them for me when they were young and mentored them as they grew up. He is the complete opposite of everything this article says. He is a fantastic person who loves people and helps everyone in need. God Bless you Freddie Cook. We all know you are a responsible caring compassionate human being. Wish there were more like you.
