Somerville’s annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration has been rescheduled to Monday, January 28 due to last weekend’s snowstorm. The celebration will take place at the East Somerville Community School auditorium, 50 Cross St., from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. The event will feature musical performances, readings by winners of the student essay contest, and more. This year, the Somerville Human Rights Commission is also holding a Winter Clothing Drive during the event. Donations of gently used or new winter clothing for school-aged children are welcome, and will be distributed to the Somerville Family Learning Collaborative’s Clothing Closet.

Ola Cafe in Somerville is doing their part helping furloughed federal employees. Present your federal photo ID Monday-Friday for the remainder of the government shut down and receive a free coffee and egg and cheese on a croissant or English muffin. Ola Cafe is located at 112 Broadway, Somerville. Hours: Monday–Friday, 6:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. to receive the deal.

There is a meeting about the Green Line Extension with GLX Project officials on Wednesday, January 30, 6:00–8:00 p.m., at the East Somerville Community School cafeteria, 50 Cross St. There will be information on the design status of the seven new stations, the upcoming traffic detours, and Community Path Extension location and connections.

The Somerville Office of Prevention and the Somerville Health & Human Services Department invite you to join in a World Café style presentation of the 2018 Somerville High School Student Health Survey results on Thursday, January 31, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Somerville High School Culinary Arts Bistro (use atrium entrance).The results will be presented in the form of an interactive game, facilitated by youth from Somerville Positive Forces 100 (SPF100), followed by a World Café style discussion about youth health issues, ideas to improve student well-being, and how participants will incorporate this information into their work going forward. Refreshments will be served. The Student Health Survey was administered to all Somerville High School students in February 2018, and anonymous answers were compiled into an analytical report and compared with state and national averages in various student health categories including alcohol use, drug use, bullying, physical, mental and sexual health, overall school environment, and school services. A survey will be administered to Somerville middle school students in this spring.

A strength and conditioning program for players who are Little League 11 or 12 years old, or Babe Ruth 13, 14 or 15 years old will run from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. on Sundays from January 27 through March 24 (with the exception of February 10) for a total of eight sessions. The fee is $80. The program will take place at Rx Strength Training, 50 Tufts St., Somerville. Pat Kelsey, who will run the program, is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) who specializes in sports performance. His training sessions focus on basic barbell movements, kettlebells, medicine balls and bodyweight exercises. Athletes will learn essential strength movements like squats and deadlifts, advanced rotational power for throwing and hitting, and reactive agility for fielding and base running. Performance enhancement and injury prevention are the primary goals.

This past fall, the City of Somerville, Somerville Public Schools, and many of our community agencies and organizations partnered to reach out and ask you – the community – what you value most and where they should focus their efforts to make sure every Somerville youth has a great learning experience while growing up in our city. Through surveys, focus groups and community visioning sessions, you shared your voice and values and let them know what is most important in creating a thriving, healthy, opportunity-filled city for our youth. Somerville Prevention Services, the SHS PTSA, and Somerville’s Health and Human Services Department invite you to a discussion on Marijuana, Vaping and Youth. The discussion takes place on Thursday, February 7, 6:00-7:30 p.m. at the Somerville High School Highlander Café/Culinary Arts Bistro, 81 Highland Ave. Prevention resources will be distributed. A light dinner and refreshments will be provided, and childcare and interpretation services will be available.
