SHS Building Project Update

On April 18, 2018, in Latest News, by The Somerville Times

Some students will begin meeting in the modular classrooms upon their return from April break.

Phase 1 of the Somerville High School Building Project gets under way on Monday, April 23rd. Over the April break, several English and social studies classes will be relocated to the modular units on the concourse. Students in those classes will begin meeting in the modular classrooms upon their return from April break. The modular classrooms are equipped with all the appropriate classroom technology including Smartboards and each classroom has its own heating/air conditioning unit. The classrooms are secured, with a safety plan in place.

The high school traffic pattern will change as the concourse will no longer be available as a vehicle pass-through. Until  April 21, the City Hall/SHS concourse will be closed to all traffic to allow for the concourse and driveway areas to be reconstructed. Portions of the existing driveway and sidewalk will be excavated to widen the driveway closest to City Hall and install a roundabout that will allow for two-way traffic throughout the overall project. Beginning Monday, April 23, all traffic will enter and exit the City Hall/SHS concourse via the driveway closest to City Hall. The current “exit” driveway (closest to the SHS Library) will be closed during construction for the safety of students, teachers, and staff. With the new configuration, vehicles will enter the driveway, proceed to the newly constructed roundabout, and exit the concourse via the same driveway. In order to minimize traffic congestion, parents/guardians who drop their SHS student(s) off in the morning and/or pick them up at the end of the school day, are encouraged to do so in front of the atrium entrance to the high school.

If you would like to receive bi-weekly email updates from the City about construction, including timelines and impact, please sign up for the City’s email list at: construction@somervillema.gov. Throughout the duration of this project, the district will be sending out regular updates regarding the impact of this project to Somerville High School to all SHS parents/guardians as well as parents/guardians of rising 9th graders. Additionally, updates and information will be available on the project website, www.somervillema.gov/highschool.
