Top candidates advance to November 7 ballot

The Preliminary Election to determine the top two candidates for the positions of Mayor of Somerville and Ward 1 School Committee member took place on Tuesday.

The two candidates with the most votes for each office will face each other in a final matchup on November 7.

As of press time, the unofficial results are as follows:

In the mayor’s race, incumbent Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone proved to be the top vote getter, garnering 58.16% of the vote.

Curtatone’s leading opponent, Payton Corbett, followed with 35.06% of the vote.

Mayoral contender Kenneth C. Van Buskirk III trailed with 6.78% of the vote, and is subsequently eliminated from the race.

In the race for Ward 1 School Committee, Emily Ackman led the field with 45.14% of the vote, while Kenneth M. Salvato followed with 33.07%. Both will share spots on the November ballot.

Third place finisher Guillermo Samuel Hamlin was eliminated from the race with a total of 21.78% of the vote.

The results listed here do not include absentee, provisional, overseas, or military ballots that will be added to the final counts.
