SeniorPet Donors Come Through for Sampson the Dog

The SeniorPet program at Somerville-Cambridge Elder Services (SCES) wants to thank everyone who recently contributed to support the good health of Sampson the dog.

Sampson is doing alright, and his owner was overwhelmed by the generosity of those who donated to help SeniorPet cover the vet bills.

It’s quite a reversal from December, when the vet discovered a pair of tumors on Sampson. The owner, who has limited means, put the $1,150 surgery on a charge card. Our SeniorPet program heard about that dilemma and we helped spread the word about Sampson, to ask for help.

A month later, a biopsy determined the tumors were non-malignant, and Sampson’s owner was deeply touched by the outpouring of support and concern they received. She recently stopped by SCES to thank us, to let us know how much happiness we brought into her life. I am writing this letter in the hope that all those who donated will read this and know what a difference they made in the life of a local pet owner.

SeniorPet helps clients defray the burdens of pet ownership by providing food, supplies and affordable medical care. The program runs on both donations and volunteerism, by enlisting community support to arrange for basic pet services and taking up collections to cover more expensive medical needs.

Donations can be mailed to SCES/SeniorPet Program, 61 Medford Street, Somerville, MA 02143. For more information about SeniorPet or to donate, call 617-628-2601 ext. 3051 or email mmazzeo@eldercare.org.

Sincerely,

Marie Mazzeo, Volunteer Manager at Somerville-Cambridge Elder Services
