The Somerville Department of Public Schools sent out letters to parents and guardians of the city’s students this week explaining its policies and procedures regarding its safety protocols. The text reads as follows:

Dear Parents and Guardians:

We have received several inquiries regarding our safety protocol. As we have often stated, the safety of our students is our top priority. We have a strong safety protocol in place and are extremely proactive in following up on any concerning behavior that may be brought to our attention.

Whenever we receive information that involves potential concerns about the safety of a student or students, we follow a proven protocol and practice that involves a series of steps. Those steps include collecting information, engaging all parties involved including parents/guardians of any students who may be impacted. We work in partnership with all city agencies as well as state and federal supports including mental health and social services, law enforcement at every level, and other agencies as needed.

We want to reiterate that if at any point, safety of a student or students is at question, our practice has and will continue to be to notify parents. This process is always completed in full compliance with state and federal privacy laws so that we ensure the protection of your child’s rights and privacy.
