quiz showSixteen teams from across the Commonwealth advanced from a pool of 131 schools to compete in the seventh season of High School Quiz Show, WGBH’s televised academic tournament hosted by Billy Costa. This year’s field was the largest yet, and those going forward to compete on the broadcast include four schools new to the tournament, along with two past champions. The teams moving onto the next phase of High School Quiz Show received the highest scores on an oral quiz at the Super Sunday qualifying event at WGBH’s studios in Brighton on November 15, 2015.

“We’re thrilled to have so many schools from across the Commonwealth excited to share their academic talents,” said WGBH President and CEO Jon Abbott. “WGBH is proud to provide a platform for students and educators to display their passion for knowledge and learning.”

WGBH made the official announcement on the High School Quiz Show website . The schools that will compete for the state title are:

·       Acton-Boxborough High School

·       Advanced Math & Science Academy (season six champion)

·       Andover High School (first time in tournament)

·       Austin Preparatory School (first time in tournament)

·       Belmont High School

·       Chelmsford High School

·       Hingham High School

·       Lexington High School

·       Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School

·       Newton North High School

·       North Quincy High School

·       Norton High School (first time in tournament)

·       Shrewsbury High School

·       Somerville High School

·       Thayer Academy (first time in tournament)

·       Wellesley High School

The top 16 teams will advance to compete in the televised, single-elimination, bracketed academic tournament that will determine a state champion. The season will culminate with a Governor’s Cup Challenge, when WGBH’s High School Quiz Show state champion team meets New Hampshire Public Television’s (NHPTV) Granite State Challenge winner for the fourth annual interstate quiz show face-off. This season’s Governor’s Cup Challenge will be produced and hosted by NHPTV.

High School Quiz Show begins taping at WGBH in January in front of a studio audience. The seventh season will premiere Saturday, February 6 at 6pm on WGBH 2.
