Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan has announced that Allen Harmon, 36, of Somerville, was arraigned today in Middlesex County Superior Court on charges of assault to rape, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, and indecent assault and battery.  Clerk Magistrate Michael Sullivan ordered Harmon held without bail until Harmon’s next scheduled court hearing on Thursday, April 16.

“The actions this defendant are accused of are alarming,” said District Attorney Ryan.  “This was a frightening attack by a stranger.  Luckily, alert passersbys intervened and were able to put an end to the attack.”

“The Somerville Police Department continues to monitor this case as it goes forward,” said Somerville Police Chief David Fallon.  He added, “Our thoughts remain with the victim and anyone affected by this grave event. We have reached out to the local community around this issue and would like to remind residents that the Police Department has a Victims Advocate and anyone is welcome to reach out to her at 617-625-1600 ext. 7279.  This type of event is an anomaly in Somerville, but its rarity in no way lessens our concern. We will remain vigilant in ensuring the safety of this neighborhood and our city.”

Authorities say at approximately 5:30 p.m., October 8, 2014, a woman was attacked as she was going to her vehicle on Central Street in Somerville. People nearby heard screams and ran to the woman’s aid.  The defendant fled the immediate area but police were directed to his nearby home.  The defendant was located inside his home and placed under arrest.

These charges are allegations and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

The prosecutor assigned to this case is Assistant District Attorney Kate Kleimola.  The Victim Witness Advocate is Andrew Lauranzano.
