Robyn Hitchcock coming to the Arts at the Armory

Singer-songwriter Robyn Hitchcock may not enjoy the widest appeal among music enthusiasts in general, but the oft-times unorthodox creative powerhouse commands the respect and admiration of his own relatively small but devoted following.

Hitchcock’s unusual brand of musical storytelling will be showcased at the Arts at the Armory on Wednesday, November 12, at 7 p.m.

The man’s music has been classified as alternative rock, jangle pop, psych folk, and any number of other colorful terms. Size it all up, though, and one can only be impressed by a genuine measure of originality that defies description. Surrealism blends with humor and observations about life in general.
Hitchcock first emerged in the late 70’s as a member of England’s The Soft Boys, then later forming The Egyptians, after which he branched on his own as a solo artist, producing in the ensuing years more than 20 albums and an equally voluminous numbers of singles.

The consummate Renaissance man, along with his musical expressions, Hitchcock is an accomplished visual artist and writer. He has even made appearances as an actor in several mainstream movie releases.

His latest album release, The Man Upstairs, features five original compositions as well as five covers of songs by the Grant-Lee Phillips, Psychedelic Furs, The Doors, Roxy Music, and Norwegian indie-rock band I Was a King.

Be sure to catch this rare Somerville appearance of one of popular music’s most unique and creative forces working today.

Robyn Hitchcock, Wednesday, November 12, 7:00 p.m. at The Arts at the Armory, 191 Highland Ave #1A, Somerville.
