Our View of the Times – September 3

powderhouse_viewWell, what is so special about the opening of yet another T-stop in our city, one might ask? On the Orange Line, no less? After all, the big news is the Green Line Extension, isn’t it? What with its blazing a new trail through previously untouched territory, transit-wise that is.

Not so fast, though. As we all know, the route towards the redevelopment of the Assembly area has been a long and torturously twisting one. Riddled with false starts, unfulfilled commitments, and ultimately triumphant in the realization of its present state as a modern, thriving commercial success story.

Those who have followed the area’s history remember the agonizingly slow pace of progress through the years, and can feel a special sense of appreciation for what has been accomplished.

A city’s public transportation system is a reflection of its arterial health, an undeniably vital part of its infrastructure. This this station, as well as the GLX project that is still in development, serve to prove that our city is thriving and growing ever stronger with the passage of time.

In these days when we have seen so many great cities go under economically, it is encouraging to observe just how well we ourselves are doing, in the greater scheme of things.

Just another one of many stops along the way? For some this may be so. But for those of us who seek to view the bigger picture over the longer haul, it can be a comforting thought to know we have achieved this milestone.

And a beautifully elegant milestone it is. Next stop, who’s to say?
