On Saturday afternoon, October 26, an attendance of over 200 were present for the “Founders Memorial Rink” dedication on Somerville Avenue.
The rink is being dedicated to five men whom shortly after returning to Somerville after being in the service, started Somerville Hockey. The rink is the memorial for their hard work and efforts over the years and the dedication was nothing short of being well done.
Mr. Raymond Deeran, John Doncaster, George Hughes, Joesph Guidi & James Papaluca were the five men who started it all and had the vision that someday the sport of hockey here in Somerville would have a tremendous impact on kids back then and today, as well as tomorrow’s generations to come.
The speakers included Brian O’Donovan, current president of Somerville Youth Hockey League, who expressed his pleasure in the rink and what it will mean to the kids today.
Another inspiring speaker who is another Somerville hero is US Colonel Richard Johnson who has served his country and us well on three tours of duty. He is a past Ward One Alderman, and a family man with kids going through the hockey program here in Somerville.
The crowd in attendance were the many family members who have benefitted from the program and the gentlemen themselves.
The dedication was well received and those in attendance will not soon forget the day and the dedication of our new “Founders Skating Rink.” If you missed the dedication come down to Somerville Avenue and witness for yourself a wonderful rink right next door to the Veterans Skating Rink.
