Please join Governor Deval Patrick, Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone, Federal Realty Trust, and DCR to celebrate the official opening of Baxter State Park at Assembly Row on Wed., Sept. 18, 4 to 6 p.m.

A formal speaking program and ribbon cutting to celebrate the new 6.1-acre park on the banks of the Mystic River will be followed by a picnic with hot dogs, popcorn, ice cream, music and fun for the whole family. Bring your picnic blankets and baskets.

    Why is the park named for an obscure MDC Commissioner, and not someone who was influential in the city of Somerville? Who made that decision?

    Did you bother checking to see if any other Baxter State Parks around… I don’t know.. like maybe the one in Maine that’s been around for 80+ years:

    I went camping with the Old Man at the original Baxter State Park, at the foot of Mt. Katahdin, in 1958; a little different from the Somerville one…

    An evening’s amusement was going to the campsite dump, and watching
    the bears fight with the raccoons over the trash…

    Now, That’s Entertainment!
