Somerville residents, along with city and state officials, gathered on Tuesday to celebrate the reopening of East Somerville Community School.

Closed since a fire put the previous building out of commission in 2007, the new state-of-the-art facility will unify students in grades K-8 as they make use of the new schoolhouse.

Visitors toured the grounds, partook of refreshments, and listened to musical performers and speakers who came to praise the revived educational institution. Children played in the fully equipped, modern style playground areas.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony marked the official opening of the school, and students will be heading to the new classrooms this week.

I went on a tour of the school; it’s beautiful. Thank you, Mayor Curtatone!

Somerville did well considering the hurdles and red tape thrown up by the state. Somerville remained patient and ended up building a beauiful school that will serve East Somerville proudly.
