  1. JPM says:

There is no such thing as a free lunch.

More accurately the headline should say “Taxpayers Funds Used to Pay for Breakfasts and Lunches That Their Parents Could and Should be Paying For.”

Seriously, there is no need for a program like this in Somerville. It is a waste of money.

  2. Comrade Hilton says:

I love it. Anything that riles up the greed-headed teabats is golden with me. And some kids get fed too. Make mine a ham and swiss on rye.

  3. JPM says:

It’s alwys amusing when anyone who quesitons government spending of what are limited funds is labelled as some right wing Teabgag nut.

Acutally I am a registered Democrat. Nevertheless, is this an essential program? I think not.

  4. sarah says:

I was in the parks and at the pools when this program started. First off, I believe it is federal, for what it’s worth. They drop off boxes of lunches, regardless of how many people are there who actually want it. The amount of waste is disgusting.

  5. wastewastewaste says:

check out our “Music Camp”. summer program using our schools to teach kids from Lexington, Acton, etc. And they all get the “free” lunch, siblings, etc. EVERY DAY. These people have mucho money, but there’s no income check for this service. You just stick your hand out and get a free lunch. 60-70 people every day, all summer. and it comes from your paycheck.

  6. SomMom says:

To answer JPM’s question, is there a need for a program like this in Somerville? — Since about 60 percent of the kids in our schools are low-income or below the poverty level, and since somerville is an extremely expensive city to live in, you can bet there are a lot of kids who go hungry over the summer, when they lose their free lunch and free breakfast from school.

During the school year, all families get sent a form to see if they’re eligible for free or reduced price lunch. It’s a complex form with a lot of questions, and since we’re not eligible, I’ve never had to fill it in. In the summer I imagine it’s hard to get people to fill these forms in for all the various places that offer the free lunches. (And the food is really, really bad. So I doubt that many kids eat it if they don’t have to.)

  7. snob says:

yeah, SomMom, filling out forms is hard! especially when your child is going without food and filling out the form would solve this problem. The forms are not complicated, and the food is not terrible. I guess you feel ‘really, really bad food’ is ok for poor folks? what a snob. a typical lunch is pizza, apple, juice, yogurt. today chicken nuggets, orange, juice and crackers. nothing wrong with that, you snob. someone mentioned Music Summer School-prime example of what’s wrong. People from wealthy suburbs sitting here eating lunch. close to 100 people every day for the summer. So that adds to our statistics about how many ‘hungry’ people are in Somerville. Don’t believe me, come watch. List of students represents: Acton, Lincoln, Lexington, Arlington, Brookline. and more. if you don’t qualify-==just show up at Music School, no pesky forms to fill out, just a free lunch.

  8. Larry says:

It actually is quite disgusting that they go around giving out free lunches every day and no one checks anything. Though…. did someone say chicken nuggets? Haven’t had those in a while. It may be worth it to drive the BMW down and grab a bucket or two. It’s FREE! The money must grow on tress to pay for this.

  9. Harry says:

Free lunches on taxpayer’s money! They are not “free”, folks! At least they should have some kind of BMI requirement: if you are already chubby, no lunch for you kiddo! Am I right?

  10. c'mon down! says:

Kennedy School, Music School Monday through Friday, still going for the next few weeks. See the suburban Volvos, Saabs, Audi’s blocking the Fire Lane all day long. See them crowd the café with hands outstretched looking for the free Federal lunch. Watch them knock over the Somerville Special Education students who are there for Academic programs. It’s amazing. Music students and their friends and siblings eat free and add to the statistics on hunger in Somerville.

  11. Desi 21 says:

Somv Mom with 4 boys who are always hungry! Listen when we decided to have 4 kids, we took on the responsibility to pay for them. Get rid of this program, it becomes a waste of food and money. Last year I was at one of the parks when this was going on. Half the people eating them were the moms who were sending their kids to get as many as possible. Funny thing was 5 of the moms taking were not even U.S. citizens. When my kids asked I explained to them that we go home for lunch and that nothing in life is free.

  12. Grand Union says:

That’s right people, lets ID the summer children to make sure they are legal law abiding americans before they can get some lunch while they play outside instead of staring at television. This will solve all our budget issues. Big picture.
