It’s time to get your beard in perfect shape because it’s beard contest time.

On November 3 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., Beardfest, a Somerville Arts Council (SAC) event, will occur at the armory this year for the first time.  It has already taken place for two years elsewhere.

Aside from event participants, rock and soul music by DJ Pace, refreshments and a fake beard workshop will round out the festivities.

The main goal of Beardfest is, “To have fun and show how folks can be creative with their bodies and facial hair. Everyone is unique and creative,” said Gregory Jenkins, Director of SAC.

The event will give beard and mustache sporters a chance to shine in that department.

“The contest itself will have a ‘parade of beards,’” said Jenkins.

Five categories will be included in the contest, which are: natural full beard, free-style full beard, free-style partial beard, which includes goatees, sideburns “and any other creative combination of the above,” free-style mustache and best fake beard.  Prizes will be awarded.

Because volunteer Todd Easton “had attended” a beard event previously, he suggested to the Somerville Arts Council that they hold a beard and moustache contest, according to Jenkins.

Further, at the event’s a volunteer-run “create-your-own-beard table” each attendee may participate, if they are so inclined.

There will be a cover of $5 for general admission, as well as for registrants.

Interested individuals may register at www.somervilleartscouncil.org/beardfest.

Alternatively, at-the-door registration will be available.
