The View From Prospect Hill – July 18

On July 18, 2012, in Latest News, by The Somerville Times

Somerville enjoys a well-deserved reputation as being one of the most creatively diverse and active communities in the entire country. This coming weekend we celebrate this fact with ArtBeat, the Somerville Arts Council’s annual festival which spotlights the works of our locals artists, musicians, and others who help make the city a constant source of inspiration and pride of accomplishment for all of us.

This year’s ArtBeat theme, migration, adds an extra dimension of meaning to the festivities. Whether referring to acts of nature, such as migration of birds and butterflies, or to the movements of peoples, it is a theme that can be rich in possibilities for creative interpretation and expression.

Yes, immigration to the area by citizens of other lands can often incite controversy and heated discussion. Few of us, however, would argue against the time-honored tradition of celebrating the diversity of our cultural mix and the right of individuals to legally immigrate and add to the fabric of our society.

Let us consider the positive aspects of migration in all its various forms as we take in the sights and sounds of this lively festival of the arts this weekend.

It is a world in motion these days. We can remain rooted to our core values yet still appreciate the beauty of the panoply that passes before us. We will be all the better for it.

Thank you, SN, for recognizing the importance that immigration (and immigrants) play in our community. For too many people and for too long, “immigrant” has been a dirty word. We should celebrate all of the cultures that make up our city and nation.

J M B, I don’t think anyone – at least that I have EVER met around here – has a problem with legal immigration. Immigrant has NEVER been a dirty word – as I suspect at some point that you’re an immigrant.

The problem is with ILLEGAL immigration and if you don’t know the difference between legal and illegal immigration then please post your home address. I’ll pop by uninvited – when you can least afford it (maybe your work cut your pay) – eat your food, drink your beer, sleep in your bed, bang the family pooch, drive my unregistered/uninsured car over your neighbor, sell drugs from your house and stay and stay and stay. You won’t be able to ever get rid of me and if you call the cops the governor has directed them to ignore you.

Maybe that will teach you the difference between a legal (invited) and an illegal (univited) guest.

For once I agree with Harry. Legal immigration to our country is afforded to those who want to follow our laws regarding immigration.

Deval Patrick, Obama, and all the other liberals that are destroying our country want the illegals to have a fast track to citizenship so that they can vote for the loony liberal democrat policies.

THe Democrat Party no longer represents the working man and women. They want us to be a bastion of socialism. The upcoming elections will determine the fate of our country. I fear that Obama will be re-elected. He is a failure who won’t discuss his failed record. He even makes Jimmy Carter look competent.

Immigrants are and should be welcome to come hear as long as they follow the immigration laws like my grandparents did when they came here from Italy LEGALLY.

Hillson, “For once I agree with Harry”…. seriously? That hurts, dude.

  5. j. connelly says:

Yes “Hillson” “THe Democrat Party no longer represents the working man and women. They want us to be a bastion of socialism”. They and people like the ACLU who are more concerned representing killer Terrorists instead of Americans. They want us all dressed in gray outfits and hats and calling each other commerade. But they themselves want to be exempt. Obama, that righteous hypocrite, did not pay thousands of dollars of his parking violations to both Cambridge/Somerville (while @ Hahvud U) until he decided on running for President. Course if you or I did that we would have been in jail. So he’s no better than his opposition, actually that makes him lower than his opponent.

  6. Yuppy Scum says:

Connelly, please put down the bottle! :)

  7. Hillson says:

Didn’t mean to hurt Harry-just agreed with him on this one. Our country and our way of life is being taken away from us by the likes of moonbats, liberals,Obama,Deval Patrick, Joe the phony Curtatone, and all the other panderers who want to take from the workers and give to the shirkers.

WE are being robbed of everything. God save our country and our way of life before it is too late.
