A Somerville Police Traffic Unit performing speed enforcement on Mystic Avenue last week stopped a driver who was reportedly exceeding the speed limit, according to reports.

The driver explained to police that he was driving a friend’s car, and did not have his license with him.

When asked to identify himself he reportedly told police three times that his name was Vinny Monteiro. The man was reportedly asked numerous times if that was how his name was spelled on his license and he repeatedly said that it was, police said.

The officer radioed the police dispatcher to do a license status check on the information given by the alleged speeder. The dispatcher reported “no response” to the reported information.

The man was once again asked if Vinny Montero was the name on his license and he said, “Yes.”

Police said that several RMV queries revealed that the man’s true identity was Verano Sebastio Monteiro, 32, and that his license was status “suspended.”

Monteiro was arrested and charged with speeding and operation of a motor vehicle with a suspended license.
