The Annual Memorial Day Parade is this Sunday. Kickoff time at 1p.m. as usual. It runs all the way up Highland Avenue, through Davis and Teele Squares, ending at Clarendon Hill.  This year Frank Sensi of Veterans Services has done another great job for the city. He has worked very hard putting this together.

Condolences to the Capobianco and Curtatone families for the loss of Mama Elena Capobianco. She took an unfortunate fall last week in her driveway. She was taken to Mass General where she passed away on Monday. She was a wonderful women and matriarch of one of Somerville’s leading families. She will be will be missed by all who knew her. Funeral services will be at Cota Funeral Home, on Washington Street, this Thursday.

Another local person has been in a motorcycle accident. Well known local Steve Dalrymple of Steve and Sons Home Repair was on a charity bike ride this past weekend and was seriously hurt. He will be in the hospital while he is on the mend and we certainly hope he gets better fast. He is presently at the Worcester Memorial Hospital in Worcester at the University campus. Meanwhile, our friend Bill Chambers, who was in an accident this past month, has been moved.

Congratulations to Somerville High School senior student Enxhi Popa on her accomplishments over the past year or so. She was the recipient of this year’s 27th Annual Gene Brune Scholarship Award of $1,000, which was presented to her this past Sunday at his breakfast in Malden.  The breakfast was packed with several hundred persons attending.

With 100 years of service here in the community, St. Benedicts Parish is celebrating their centennial this year servicing East Somerville and parts of Charlestown. Cardinal Sean O’Malley himself was there and personally gave Mass this past Sunday. St. Benedicts was home to former Cardinal Cushing. Not many knew that the famous Cardinal here in Boston started out at St. Benedicts and often, over the years as Cardinal, returned to his first parish to say Mass many times. Many well known Somervilliens came out of St. Benedicts as well and especially from the Little Flower School, which was closed down a few years back. Congratulations to all the Parishioners now and in the past and hopefully for a long time to come in the future for 100 years of a great church.

An update on Council on Aging situation: It appears that Lady J, who by the way is on a stress leave (we hear with pay) for about 12 weeks, seems to be getting better quickly. We hear she’s been spotted down at one of the elderly centers this past week. Maybe she’s going to try to save the city money and get back to work fast. We noticed that Demo Man, who filed Chapter 7 Bankruptcy recently, was seen driving a brand new Cadillac Escalade. It looks beautiful, a very nice color blue. We know that’s about 50K to buy but maybe he is leasing it, or maybe just borrowing it to get around – or does Chapter 7 allow you to have such and expensive car? Can you imagine the cost of gas? Maybe he has a new demo project? So many questions!

Happy Birthday to John Sullivan who turns 94 next week. John has served for many years here in the community, most notably as a Lions member. He is a solid guy and great supporter of all the events. We wish him Happy Birthday.

Congratulations to Nella Nunes, who broke her foot this past winter, for finally getting free of the cast and moving around like a trooper. Though no longer putting her foot in storage, she does work at Murphy Storage on Mystic Avenue. She and her hubby Bruce Rollins will be at the Masonic Breakfast this coming Sunday morning, 8 to 11 a.m. (125 Highland Avenue), along with her brother in law Victor Vieira, who recently was elected Vice President of the Board of Directors of HMTA.

Get well to former Somerville Police Officer Bernie Doherty who is now home recovering from recent surgery. Already he’s been seen out and about the ‘Ville. Bernie is a great guy, a long time Somerville resident, and friend to many as well as his family from Winter Hill.

Congratulations to all the student athletes and cheerleaders that were honored at this past Friday evening’s Saint Clements’s Junior / Senior High-School Annual Sports Awards Banquet. The event honored the accomplishments of their student athletes with a dinner and an awards ceremony. The school also bid farewell and thanks to their Athletic Director Shawn Thornton, who will be leaving Saint Clements after eight great years. He will be heading over to Everett to a new position at Pope John School. We all wish Shawn all the best in his future.

Former candidate for Mayor Rick Scirocco is, we understand from rumors,  the guardian of Mr. McCarthy at 10 Howe Street, who is both in court by the city ISD department for work done on his property without a permit and, we also understand, his house is in foreclosure. Rumor has it that he has to appear before the judge on June 14th to give reason why the house looks the way it does. We will be watching this one closely to see how the Building Department and the courts handle this. We even have pictures of the back yard and how it looks. It’s been this way for several years now. Hopefully, the city and courts can settle this issue once and for all.

The Somerville High Scholarship Foundation held their annual drawing this past Friday night, and the first place prize of $10,000.00 ended up being split by six ticket holders. They are: Marshall Sloane of Century Bank, Mia Pfitzer, Frank Schrage, and Frances DiFraia. One from  Group of 4 are from Healy School, Kim Connolly, Kathleen Donahue, Mary Gooch, and Joan Lynch. Second Group of 4 are, Bill Wood, Charline Harris, Stanley  Czesniuk,  and Maureen Liberatore. Congratulations to all the winners. We hear that, as usual, everyone had a blast and lots of door prizes were given out during the evening. Great work this group of dedicated citizens do every year for a great cause for the students at the high schools. A check for each of the six was written out for $1,666.66. The two groups mentioned were splitting the $1,666.66 amongst themselves.

Remember the interview that we did two or three years ago with President George W. Bush’s former Chief of Staff Andy Card?  Well, the Republican who hinted around then to The Somerville News that he may be interested in becoming our next governor was in Boston on Saturday at a kick off campaign for ALS (Lou Gerick Disease) at Fenway Park for former Governor Paul Cellucci. Andy Card promised if he does run he would let The Somerville News know first. We will be watching very closely to see if he throws his hat in the ring for governor, now that Deveal Patrick has said this would be his last term, which ends in three years. If he runs it’s possible a Murray/Curtatone ticket could happen.
