Saint Clement Students excel in winter sports

All-Stars named in the Catholic Central league

Athletes in St. Clement winter sports earned all star and MVP honors in the Catholic Central league.

Senior hockey goalie Sean Simas won the league MVP award despite losing his starting defenseman along with five other seniors from last season. “I knew we were going to be young so I would have to face a ton of shots, but I was up for challenge,” said Simas. The team finished tied for last in the league posting a 1-6-1 record, but despite that, he earned MVP getting three of five votes from other coach’s in the league. Simas is the first player in the school’s history to receive a hockey league MVP award.

Simas saw over 700 shots and gave up 77 for a 3.85 goals against average. He posted two shutouts and averaged 47.5 shots a night.

Christy Novembre unanimously won the league MVP award after averaging 25 points and 12 rebounds for the girls basketball team which won a league title for the first time in school history. Eighth grader Jess Popken, sophmore guard Allison Caloggero and senior center Tahisha Basile were named to the all-league team.

Three members of the boys basketball team were named all-stars. Sophomore shooting guard Kevin Foley, senior forward Rony Charles and senior 3-time all-star point guard James Alphonse were each recognized. Alphonse, who led the Catholic Central League in scoring averaging 22 points per game.
