Demolition work on Thorndike Street causes ‘serious head injury’

By George P. Hassett

A construction worker was injured Tuesday on Thorndike Street when the roof of a home he was demolishing fell and struck him in the head.
Somerville firefighters treated the unidentified man as he lay on the roof of the home at 14 Thorndike St. A call for an industrial accident at 1:22 p.m. brought them to the scene.
He was placed on a stretcher and carried into a window and through the home and out the front door to an ambulance. He was transported to Massachusetts General Hospital.
Fire Chief Kevin Kelleher said the man suffered a serious head injury. Witnesses said the man was blinking his eyes as he was carried away.
State inspectors are investigating the incident. The home is not occupied and is under construction, fire officials said.
City spokeswoman Jackie Rossetti said the home had the necessary permits to be demolished. Investigators from the state Occupational Safety and Health Administration were also on site after the injury.
