Happy Birthday this week to one of our Villen friends as well as a  friend of The Times: Big time happy birthday to Steve Dalrymple, a well-known local guy who owns his own construction business. We wish him the very best.

Best wishes to our own Donald and Patricia Norton, celebrating 48 years of marriage this year on September 1. Donald’s very first airplane ride, on Mohawk Airlines, was Boston to Columbia, SC to get married. It was a great trip down and back, flying just over the trees.

There was a great turnout for the 4th Annual Fight Night amateur boxing night at Somerville High School. We have to congratulate the staff and kids for a great entertaining night at that. A large crowd over 600 attended. The president of the club, Stoney, keeps doing a great job. Also a good job by Bruce Desmond as MC and Nancy Bacci from the recreation department. Any young kid looking to join in can contact the club down in East Somerville on Cross Street.

Not much publicity about it, but the guy who took out nomination papers for mayor and then decided he couldn’t do it, Philip M. Mitza of Autumn Street, is now running a sticker campaign, so we hear. He even has a web site about it.

There’s a new web site in town. Check it out at www.somervillema.com. The Somerville Times is on the site. Also check out www.medfordma.com.

So we’re going through the websites of the various candidates for Ward 6 Alderman and we notice that candidate Lance Davis has some big names backing him, from Mayor Joe, present Alderman Rebekah Gewirtz, Alderman-at-Large Jack Connolly, State Representative Provost and former Mayor Gene Brune. We thought you’d find it interesting that these progressive individuals here in Somerville would support a guy who chooses to work as Senior Corporate Attorney for Oracle Corporation. Oracle has shipped hundreds of thousands of jobs out of USA over to China and other countries in the recent past, the same company that was sued for failure to pay overtime to 1,700 union employees. Next, you’ll hear that Oracle is the company of the people and they love unions. So it’s a choice where you go to work and that’s good, but if you’re going to call yourself progressive and for the people then maybe you’d explain why you’re working for the so-called one percent. We noticed he doesn’t say what company, if any, he’s currently working for, just that he’s a corporate counsel. By the way, we noticed some well-known unions such as the Greater Boston labor Council and SEIU local 888 were also backing candidate Davis. We also noticed his contributors and next week we will let you know about that. He apparently doesn’t have a problem with large donations like the progressives have been fighting against.

At the recent Mayor Joe fundraiser held at the WHYC last week it looks like less than 100 people attended. The usual department heads and family members, and maybe a developer or two. And yes, the usual aldermen and School Committee members were not present.

Don’t forget, all you hungry residents, especially those in the Thurston and Medford Streets area: this coming Tuesday, the 1st, it’s the grand re-opening of the Thurston Spa. Try them out, drop in and say “Hi” to John and his family and friends. Great local places like these are too few here in the city and we need more, if only getting the permits were more hassle free.

The Q&A will be moderated by DJ Sterling Golden of Dirty Water News and WEMF radio.
